Amnesty International

I pray to God that I'm never in a situation where Amnesty International is my only hope, but it is good to know that someone cares, as they do.

Open Democracy

This site makes www.complexman.com obsolete.  In depth and balanced discussion of critical issues, and not afraid of complexity.

Humanity's Team

Fortunately, there are a great many people around the globe who share these concerns and are working with a great sense of urgency to replace perpetual conflict with genuine Peace.

Joseph Campbell Foundation

A laudable quest to analyze the foundations of human belief, and reveals how so much of it has common roots.

The 'Age of Aquarius'

There is an interesting phenomenon going on in the world, which I have only recently become acquainted with.

Essentially, there aren't just old theological and semantic struggles taking place between eg Judeo-Christianity and Islam.  There is a much bigger battle in progress between Judeo-Christian-Islamic fundamentalism/fascism and 'New Age', which places responsibility for our future firmly with ourselves, and severely shakes up the 'old' model of God.  But, this 'new' model of God may actually be older than it appears.

According to New Age philosophy, we have now leaving the Age of Pisces (the last 2,000 years), in which we had to be told what to believe and do, and are now entering the Age of Aquarius, in which we are responsible for own beliefs and actions and responsible for achieving our own destinies.

These sites give just a hint of this more empowered view, where fear is not the driver for all our behaviour.

Must Reads

The Battle for God, by Karen Armstrong

He who controls God, controls Man.  First we design God to our requirements, then we activate Him to control others, dehumanize our enemies, oppress our women and do whatever else we want.  Karen Armstrong is a brilliant and compelling author, fair, balanced and informed, and uncomfortable to those who thought they had God under control.

Life of Pi, by Yann Martel

I was spending the weekend in the Taj Palace Hotel in Delhi, all alone on a business trip, and decided that I was going to spend it reading a book by the pool (in between deciding which restaurant to have my next meal in).  As I approached the book section of the gift shop, a mental note filed away deep in my mind became active again and said to me: "What about that story of the boy stuck on the life boat with a tiger?"  I wondered if they had it, looked up and immediately saw a single copy staring right at me.  A truly remarkable book, illustrating how it is possible to be Christian, Muslim and Hindu simultaneously.
